Beginning March 17th, you will not need to pay to ride any SMTD fixed route bus or the Access Sangamon paratransit service. You don’t have to be a Springfield or Sangamon County resident. There is no paperwork to fill out. If you need the bus, you can take the bus. It’s free to everyone for the duration of this crisis.
We are doing this to minimize contact between drivers and riders and to eliminate any risk associated with handling currency from the fareboxes. We are still cleaning and sanitizing buses at increased intervals.
Currently we have only suspended service for the UIS Express bus and the school supplemental routes. We will issue service alerts if and when further cuts are required.
