SMTD Employment Information
If you are interested in a career at SMTD and want to submit an application for employment, the fastest and most direct way is to submit an application electronically. Paper applications are also accepted at the Administrative Building at 928 S Ninth Street during business hours (Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) On Saturdays, paper applications are accepted at the Dispatch Window from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Applications are kept on file for 12 months from the date of submittal. All inquiries and follow-up requests for employment applications must be made through the SMTD Employment Line at 217-522-6087, option 2 and then option 1. Superintendents and Human Resources are not available for walk-in interviews or meetings.

Fixed-Route Bus Operator
Fixed-Route Operators provide excellent customer service while transporting passengers on preassigned routes. Operators complete paid, comprehensive training to ensure safety, professionalism, and confidence in all aspects of operating the vehicle.
A CDL is not required to be hired. SMTD will assist with preparation for the driving test with air brake and passenger endorsements prior to completion of employee training.
Fixed-Route Operators are represented by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1249.
Qualified applicants must:
- Possess high school diploma or equivalent
- Be at least 25 years of age
- Have a clean driving record
- Pass a pre-employment Department of Transportation alcohol and drug test and physical
- DOT Regulation 49 CFR Part 40 does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including cannabis, for any reason
- Pass criminal background check

Paratransit Bus Operator
Paratransit Operators provide door-to-door transportation for people with disabilities. Operators complete paid, comprehensive training to ensure safety, professionalism, and confidence in all aspects of operating the vehicle.
Paratransit Operators are represented by Service Employees International Union Local 73.
Qualified applicants must:
- Possess high school diploma or equivalent
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Have a clean driving record
- Pass a pre-employment Department of Transportation alcohol and drug test and physical

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing information to drivers regarding passengers, detours, road conditions, and weather reports; distributing and collecting driver paperwork; and other clerical tasks. The ability to communicate professionally on the phone with passengers and on a two-way radio with operators is essential.
